About MODO

Modo is a scientific tool providing the below main features:

MODTRAN interface (creation of tape5-s),
Remote sensing sensors simulation,
Fully embedded MODTRAN 4, v3 engine,
Plot of the MODTRAN - outputs
Extraction of spectra from the MODTRAN - output
Convolution of spectra to variable spectral response characteristics
Operating system independent implementation based on the IDL virtual machine technology

This software is provided 'as is' as commercial shareware. It may be distributed freely without special permission of the copyright holder. Any changes, decompilation, or commercial redistribution are not allowed.

Compatibility: MODO supports usually the most actual and the previous IDL version.

Please report any encountered problems, bugs, annoyances and so on to ReSe (info@rese.ch).

Installation

All ReSe software requires IDL or the IDL Virtual Machine to run on any operating system. IDL VM is available as free distribution directly from RSI/Kodak. The MODO installation process is as follows:

install the IDL virtual machine from CD/DVD or by downloading through http://www.rsinc.com/idlvm - please follow the installation instructions provided by RSI
(this step is void, if you got IDL/IDL VM/ or ENVI developer installed)

double click the file modo_installer.sav (on Windows) or enter on Unix/Linux/MacOSX:
idl -vm="modo_installer.sav"
Please follow the instructions as displayed during the installation process.

For licensing, go to the Help-Menu after starting MODO and choose 'License>Identify'. Please email the displayed outputs of this job together with your complete address and affiliation. You then will receive a license key file within a few days. Just let us know if you need any further assistance or product information.

Documentation:

Please refer to the online-help files and the provided user Manual (MODO_Manual.pdf) for use of the software. Also, the modtran4 users guide is included as PDF in the distribution.

Starting the Program

type 'idl' and type 'modo' (if you have a full IDL installation, and the file modo.sav is found)

Windows: double click the file modo.sav (situated in the /bin directory of your installation)

Unix/Linux/MacOSX: enter:
idl -vm="modo.sav" (optionally include full path)

enter the license key or start the program for one month evaluation time

MODO is shareware and might be used at reduced price for educational purposes. If you still like it after a trial period of one month, please pay through

If you are a registered user of MODO you may enter your name (exactly as given in your license confirmation) and the license code which you will obtain by e-mail after payment of the shareware fee and registration.

If you want to test MODO for 30 days evaluation, just press 'evaluation mode' and you will have full functionality with some nasty messages appearing inbetween. Please note that the evaluation mode expires after 30 days and you are expected to register if you want to use the software longer than that time.

MODO License Conditions

By using, copying, transmitting, or installing MODO, you agree to all of the terms of this License. If you do not agree to any of the terms of this License, then do not use, copy, transmit or install MODO. This is not free software. Subject to the terms below, you are hereby licensed by the licensor to use the software for evaluation purposes without charge for a period of 30 days. If you use this software after the 30 day evaluation period a registration fee is required.

DO NOT INSTALL THE SOFTWARE IF YOU CAN NOT AGREE TO THE BELOW LICENSE CONDITIONS!!

License Validity

The MODO evaluation license is valid for 30 days unlimited use.
The evaluation license does NOT include the use of the embedded original MODTRAN
If the software is used for a longer period, the shareware fee applies.
The license code shall be kept secret by the licensee. Any dissemination of this code is forbidden.

Copyright

The software MODO is protected by copyright laws. The rights on the software are with Dr. Daniel Schläpfer.
Any reproduction and dissemination of the software requires the agreement of the licensor.
The embedded MODTRAN4 software is technology, licensed from the United States of America under U.S. Patent No. 5,315,513. It shall solely be used in conjunction with the MODO program. Any further dissemination of the embedded code is not covered by the license.
Any translation, changing, re-engineering or decompiling of the software is not allowed. All written documents shall not be used for further publications of any kind.

Liability

THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND; EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED; INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. LICENSOR DOES NOT WARRANT THAT THE FUNCTIONS CONTAINED IN THE SOFTWARE WILL MEET LICENSEE'S REQUIREMENTS OF THAT OPERATION WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR FREE.

The Licensor shall not be liable for special, indirect, incidental, or consequential damages with respect to any claim on account of or arising from this Agreement or use of the Software. In no even will Licensor be liable to Licensee in an amount in excess of the license fee paid by Licensee under this agreement.

Specifically, the loss of data can not be claimed to the software or the licensor. The licensee is urged to maintain appropriate backup systems himself.

The licensee is liable for damages affecting the licensor which may occur if this license contract is insulted.

Warranty Conditions

The software supports the functionality as indicated in the general documentation and the user manual.

The licensor is in general not obliged to add any functionality to the software free of charge.
The licensor is not obliged to correct any functionality in the software.

The licensee acknowledges that it is not possible to produce software free of mistakes based on the current state of technology and that herewith errors in the software and its documentation can not be excluded.

The licensor is not liable for the correct installation of the software.

The shareware fee may be refunded within 3 months after software installation if the functionality is not given due to technical reasons (e.g., incompatibility to the available computer system). Any further liability for that reason is rejected.

The licensee shall report bugs and errors in the software immediately by e-mail to the Licensor.

Support and Maintenance

The Licensee agrees that the Licensor has no obligation to provide to the Licensee any maintenance, support, or update services.

Specifically, no support is provided regarding the MODTRAN4 software features.

The maintenance of the software is performed by means of the Internet (e-mail, Web, ftp) by the licensor.

General Clauses

This Agreement shall be construed in accordance with the laws of Switzerland. Place of Jurisdiction shall be St.Gallen, Switzerland.

The support of the Remote Sensing Laboratories of the University of Zurich for the initial development of this software is greatly acknowledged.

Note that the University of Zurich is not part of this license contract and thus is legally not involved in the software distribution.
